| Objectives: | These 4 hour classes will be given by Security and Safety Professionals from AMTRAK instituted for the safety of firefighters and law enforcement who may respond to railroad emergencies. Topics Covered: • RAILROAD RIGHT OF WAY • Recommendations and suggestions: How Emergency Responders can do their job safer & easier • Passenger & Freight Railroad relationship • Emergency phone numbers • The average frequency of passenger & freight trains • Passenger load • Train speeds • TRAIN CREW ORIENTATION • AMTRAK LONG DISTANCE TRAIN CREW • SHORT DISTANCE COMMUTER TRAIN CREW • The train crew has detailed passenger & train information • RAILROAD RIGHT OF WAY SAFETY CONCERNS • R-O-W dangers • Ballast-unstable footing • Always step over the tracks • Switches- on the main line track are controlled remotely and can open and close in 1-5 seconds • HOSES & RAILS - "THE CORRECT WAY" • HOSES & RAILS • Power lines, natural gas, petroleum pipelines, fiber optic cables • Locomotives can be very quiet • Railroad mileposts, signal locations, crossings, flagging distances & methods on flagging • Do not park emergency vehicles on tracks with flashing lights to stop trains • Access points to the railroad; secondary access points if primary is blocked • Trespassing on railroad property • DO NOT crawl underneath or climb between cars • Do not cross tracks less than 25 feet from the end or front of the equipment obstructing railroad tracks • BENT RAIL • PRE-PLANNING • PNEUMATIC & ELECTRICAL HAZARDS • EQUIPMENT SCHEMATICS • TUNNELS • BRIDGES Who should attend?: Law Enforcement Officers, Fire/Rescue/EMS, Coroners |
