Objectives: A law enforcement officer's main function is gathering information. In addition, police officers should possess the communication skills necessary to keep the peace and find the objective truth. Less than two percent, though, of all police training is dedicated to improving interviewing, interrogation methods, and people skills. Indeed, police officers receive the least amount of formal training in what they do most often.

This course presents an extensive review of scientific communication approaches to the information gathering process. Topics included are: professional interviewer standards and legal interrogation methods, gaining rapport through tactical body language analysis, hand-waving study conducted by the instructor, indirect questioning, rehearsed vs. spontaneous lies, lie detection methodology, listening skills, facial expressions, legal interrogation techniques, and false confession discussions. Training manual and numerous videos and audiotapes of interrogations regarding sex crimes, accidents, thefts, etc., support lectures.
